Annette Weeks, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship; Miu Sutton, graduate assistant; and Pam Klaus, director of the Center for Franchise Development; assisted 30 girls in the local Girl Scout troop with earning their Entrepreneurship Badge last month.
The girls formed small groups and toured Nesting Goods, Cafe Pony Espresso, Lura Landis Photography and Smart Architecture and Design, all of which are owned by women entrepreneurs. Each owner talked about entrepreneurship and running a small business. They explored various components of business ownership, including brainstorming business ideas, analyzing the competition and discussing financials. Each team prepared a plan around its business and presented it to their peers. The overall goal of the workshop was to get them to start thinking about entrepreneurship and realizing that owning and operating their own business is possible.
